From ( David E Tice) My dad William E Tice entered the Navy at 17 years old and graduated from U.S. Naval Training Station-Great Lakes IL. He was then assigned to the USS Lexington cv-16 as a Gunners Mate from 1943-1946. He earned a Shellback certificiate and was a Plank owner on the Uss Lexington cv-16. He spoke of his experiences to us very little and being a Vietnam Veteran myself,I can understand that as well as my 2nd brother Wayne served in the same era. However he spoke of the Kamikaze planes comming in at the ship and the men fighting the fires and washing the debree over board. He also mentioned the Burials at sea and said we lost a lot of good men that day and I could see the sadness in his eyes. I had the pleasure of speaking to one of his shipmates Edward Percy Atkins on the phone before he passed on.I also received a few other letters one Email from Dave Tranovich in which we think our Dads were connected on ship and received email from Scott Chadbourne in which his Dad was aboard. I also received a nice letter from John Oparowski who also was aboard the USS Lexington cv-16 Dad was Honorable Discharged and raized 9 of us. He was a very hard worker. He worked 6 days a week and and I never knew of him working on Sunday. We must never forget all these brave veterans that kept us free and they are the true heros.
